Analysis 3 & 4

The third informance video I reviewed was The Fossil Watch by Maggie Potter.  I thought the video was made very very well and was extremely impressive.  She covered all 5 main points effectively and clearly. At the beginning she discusses the history of the fossil watch, where its name originated, and the design process.  I think discussing this helps create an understanding of the artifact she is documenting.  When talking about the materialization in social culture, I thought the dialogue she created was funny, but still explained its relation to the main point.

I think that the overall creativity of the video was great.  I think the creator did a very good job putting music to the video that fit the vibe of the watch and also keeps the presentation moving.  The only constructive criticism i would have is that at times it is hard to read the captions she has created in the movie.

The fourth video i reviewed was Holly Schumm’s video on Miami, Florida.  This video also was made really really well.  Right from the start i was intrigued by her footage and the narration.  The script being read through the video is also very clear and well written.  Holly covers all 5 points in the video and makes good connections to each with her artifact.  If this was a commercial to convince tourist to travel to Miami, I think that it would be very effective.

The overall creativity of the video is amazing! I think that the creator did an excellent job with clarity in both the imagery in the video as well as the script.  I feel that they put a lot of time and effort into creating this video.  One of my other favorite aspects of the creativity of the video is that she doesn’t narrate the whole time,  she breaks and fades the music back making nice transition between each main point.

Analysis 3 & 4

Video Analysis 2

My second Video Analysis was Anthony Mustari’s video about the Play Station 4.  He starts the video discussing the history of play station and the generations before the PS4.  He immediately goes on to explain how the design enhances human condition by being the ultimate entertainment system.  The PS4 can be used for internet, playing games, and watching both DVDs and Blu Ray. There are several business and social and cultural practices that are mentioned in the video.  In the gaming industry many companies make video game software for each specific console.  There is also a big social advantage to video games because of online play. You can play against friends and others all across the world.  Because the product is a media device, the influence is heavy in this topic.  He mentions that all social media sights can be accessed through the device, as well as unlimited movies and music and access to the web.  Finally, the culture of consumerism is also heavily influenced in this video.  The artifact is often advertised as coming with a free game or controller. Also for regular use with the playstation you will be purchasing new video games as they are released.

I felt that the presentation was very well put together but, i do wish that there was more than just power point slides to the presentation.  Other than that i think the information was really well put together and the presentation was well organizedScreen Shot 2015-10-29 at 9.36.21 PM.

Video Analysis 1

My first video analysis was Travis McLaughlin’s Design of Keeneland Video.  His video was very creative and knowledgable. In his video i think that he does a good job addressing all 5  main topics required.  He starts his video talking about the history of Keeneland and the way the structure is laid out now, he discusses attendant processes and approaches to the design; in order to accommodate so many people.  He then moves on to discuss the way it enhances human experience because it is a place where you can watch horse racing and have great food with your family and friends.  The design in the business, cultural, and social practices is also somewhat summed up in that statement but is mentioned at various other points in the movie.  The main topic that was highlighted in the video was the medias influence on design.  He covers different social media sites that Keeneland uses and how they use them in advertising.  He then goes into showing a commercial that was recently produced by to advertise the races opening in the spring.  After the commercial he moves into discussing the consumerism aspects of keeneland.  Other than betting, Keeneland is known for making money of their food and dining, ticket sales, and of course horse sales.Over all, I think that the video is done really well. My only critique is i wish parts were a little more lively. I also wish there would have been some more video put in the presentation instead of just pictures.

Video Analysis 1

Informance Reflection

When being tasked to make a movie, no matter the circumstances, many challenges arise during the design and creation of the piece.  Through the creative process I think the biggest challenge was conveying the information about my artifact in the form of moving images.  It’s always difficult when you have specific information and want to find the perfect images to put with it in order to convey the message properly.  However, with making essentially a documentary about an object, you tend to learn a lot about the said object.  In my video, my artifact was my car, a 2002 Subaru Forester. The biggest thing i learned about my car when doing this project was where it originated, when, and where the ideal came from. I also learned some about the culture of the car. The car is designed for the culture of a suburban family that likes to escape to the outdoors and travel.  For its time, it was very spacious and top of the line for a family that wanted it for safe travels and space for all their luggage.

The biggest thing i learned about design is the many ways to break design down into different parts.  I learned about the design of my car and the audience that it was marketed to.  When working in a design class it opens your eyes more and shows you how to open your eyes and analyze something more then just seeing it as an object.  It makes you think more into the object; why it looks like it does, who was it designed for, etc. As for what i learned about myself, I really could use some practice making movies!

Media Impact

Because my artifact is a vehicle, i feel like the media impact has had a large impression on the design.  To start,  as the want for easy access to media has increased over the years all vehicles come equipped with radios which provide access to music, news, and various discussion.  With the radio usually comes a CD player which provides access to newer technological media; and in older vehicles cassette players, which at the time was the technological advancement.  Besides these simple aspects, i would say that the biggest media impact on my artifact would be marketing and advertisement through various commercials, Subaru sponsoring events, and Subaru vehicles being used on TV shows or being spoke about by highly regarded people.  In a way these become a means of recruitment for the company and persuade people, sometimes subconsciously to be a consumer of their product.

I really liked this desk in the terms of design. Just looking at aesthetics, the desk has a simple, modern design.  The majority of the desk is wood, while the top is made of a dark metal.  With a bookshelf built in to the side of the desk, it provides a nice means of storage and possible room for a printer.  There is plenty of desktop space for a desk top or laptop computer.  Due to the desk being designed compact but also with storage space it reminded of my artifact, the subaru forester.  The car is designed to be compact like a car but have space similar to a station wagon.

Looking at target i ran across these baby devices called play yards. I liked the design of these more for the practical use.  I think this item for soon to be parents is a great investment.  It has many uses built in one. The piece is designed to work as a play pin, changing station and sleep swing.  All the pieces match so when they are separated from the main component they still look nice.  The media has influenced the consumer by advertising items like these for new parents to be very cookie cutter and everything matching.  I think the design of this product really reflects that idea.  It connects with my artifact because both are efficient for families with babies and need a safe space for their child.

I liked the design of this couch mainly because it is in the current moment very trendy.  Although i feel in the average living room setting, this item is impractical, in the terms of being designed to be catchy amongst those who like to seem trendy it is done well.  The color of the couch is an olive drab green and made of felt.  The high arm design, as well as the brads to make a tufted back design.  The couch looks like it would be nice and comfortable, yet some how to me still looks like it could be stiff.  I thought this couch could relate my car in the sense that with contemporary car design, my car looks outdated, which is something that this couch was designed and marketed to be.

Looking around the store I found advertisements for a swing set similar to this one.  I particularly like the design of this swing set because if its shape and line.  I think the play item creates a right angle provides an opportunity for a designated play to be imaginarily fenced off in your yard.  In addition it adds another activity element to the play set.  It has a neat little club house where kids could loiter with friends.  Best of all the material design with this product is portrayed to consumers as being durable, and a nice wood that will make any neighborhood house look completed and happy.

The last item i ran across i thought strangely was designed well was the futon.  The design is very simple and sleek.  What particularly caught my interest with this item is its connection with my artifact in the means of affordability.  For a younger crowd, the futon is very affordable and practical. It can double as a place for yourself or company to sleep and also conveniently folds up into a couch.  The item is great for a college age individual in their first apartment. My car also is very affordable like the futon.  Due to its small engine size it is extremely fuel efficient and doesn’t cost a lot of money to fill up.  Also due to its age and small nature, this allows the opportunity for cheaper car insurance.  Both the futon and the Subaru Forester target a general audience and both are a wise economic choice when on a budget.
